Advisory Service Program to Assist Refugees in Continuing Their Graduate Education

Civil and political insecurity and dangerous conditions have worldwide forced university students and academics into internal displacement or refugee camps.

The Open Society Institute Sofia (OSI Sofia), with assistance from the Enrollment Management and Alumni Relations Office of Central European University (CEU), and the Open Society Foundations-Central European University Liaison Office (LiO) in implementing and developing the program, opens a call for applications to offer 10 refugees advisory assistance in commencing or continuing a postgraduate university education.


The projects aim is to provide graduate-level students an advisory service that helps them navigate the bureaucracies of university applications, document verification, travel, and relocation arrangements.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to apply, candidates must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Passport/ID
  • Granted refugee status or protection due to humanitarian reasons by the Bulgarian authorities
  • Currently residing in Bulgaria
  • Bachelor`s degree issued by a state university or accredited by an international accrediting body
  • English proficiency

Program Details

The program offers selected students a chance to engage with a personal advisor who will guide them on identifying appropriate programs; assists them with their university applications as well as contacting universities worldwide in order to facilitate the application process and minimize obstacles due to formalities; and advise them on obtaining their travel and relocation documents. This advisory service program does not guarantee admission to a university. OSI Sofia, Central European University and LiO do not offer any financial support as part of this program however participation in this advisory program is free of charge. Applicants agree to waive and release the organizers and donors from any and all liability whatsoever related to the assistance being provided to them.

Application process

Applicants must submit the following in order to apply:

  • Scanned copies of passport, ID, refugee status or protection due to humanitarian reasons
  • Personal statement (500 words) explaining the applicants motivation and goals
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Scanned copies of any official documents from former universities (previous degree, transcripts, etc.)
